In this post, I will help you decide which dog among the two breeds you shall choose and would also help you with what things you need to consider before bringing a dog home.

Things to Keep in Mind before Bringing a Dog Home

Consider this before adopting a dog

It is a great feeling to welcome a new pet dog as a new member of your home. A dog is the most loving and loyal creature that dog has ever made. Dog owners are incredibly lucky to receive so much love and happiness from their dog.

Dogs demand a lot of time, attention, love and care from their owners. If you are a working person who works for 8-10 hours a day at the office, it becomes a little to adopt and take care of a dog.

But as a responsible dog owner, there are a lot of things you need to consider as well. Before you bring a new member into your house, consider the following points:

  • Do you have the time to love, feed, groom and train your dog?
  • Can you take him for a walk outside at least twice a day?
  • Are you Financially able to look after a dog?
  • Do you have the patience and willingness to learn to train your dog?
  • Do your family also support you to adopt or get a dog?
  • Do you have enough space for a dog in your house?

These are only some of the things you need to consider. More than these, you also need to be mentally prepared to handle increasing responsibilities that will lie on your shoulders. You may need to identify your dog’s body language signals, what you need to feed him, how you shall train him and many more answers to the questions that dog parenthood throws at you.

With that aside, Let’s talk in brief about American Eskimo’s first

Brief Introduction to American Eskimos

American eskimo introduction

American Eskimo dog, also called as ‘Eskie‘, wears a white coat and black eyes. They belong to the Spitz family. Eskies are family dogs and family companions who love and enjoy human company.

Although Eskimos are not so friendly with strangers, they are small, active and lively dogs who have a big-dog kind of attitude. Eskies are known to be very smart breed. They are also considered to be one of the smartest breeds of dogs.

Eskimos are a perfect mixture of Intelligence and Beauty. They look so fluffy and cute that they can captivate anyone who looks at them. They have an uncanny ability to solve problems. It is easy to use their smartness and Intelligence in tasks such as Obedience Training, agility and other dog sports.

They are excellent watchdogs and will bark to alert you about any stranger approaching or something wrong. In fact, they can become a problem barker and keep barking for very long which makes it very difficult for their owner to control them.

But if you learn to control their behaviour from their puppyhood, Then you won’t face any problems. Brief Introduction to Samoyed

Samoyed Introduction

This breed belongs to Siberia and has proved to be a very valuable companion for the people who live there. They were originally used to hunt and take care of the pack of Reindeer. They are devoted family dogs as well, though they can get strong-willed sometimes.

Samoyed fall in the category of “Working Dogs“. Samoyed is fond of humans and enjoys their company, just like Eskimos do. This is due to the fact that this breed was bred and raised by Samoyede (Nenetsky) thousands of years ago and has since developed the trait of serving humans.

They were used to pull sledges, her reindeer, hunt deer and protect Samoyede from Wild animals. Samoyed is extremely loyal and affectionate. They play well with the kids as well and are considered Intelligent family dogs.

They feel happiest when they are part of a family and he is not a breed who will like to be alone and bored. They may develop destructive behaviour if left alone for a very long time.

Samoyed has a thick white fluffy coat which sheds heavily during the season of spring. Weavers love Samoyed ‘wool’ and this wool is knitted into warm and beautiful sweaters and jackets for winter clothing.

Samoyed vs American Eskimo on the basis of Size

American eskimo vs Samoyed size comparison

Samoyed is a breed with larger size and stronger built. This is because they were originally bred to hunt deer, protect humans from wild animals and pull sleds. If I elaborate on the average size of each breed, here are some stats.

Male Samoyed stands at 21 to 24 inches tall while Females stand 18 to 21 inches tall. The average weight of both male and female samoyed lies between 50 to 62 pounds. They need a large house to settle and live comfortably.

American Eskimo is of mainly 3 size variations. These are Toy, Miniature and Standard size. Toys stand at around 8 to 12 inches tall and weigh around 9-10 pounds. Miniature stands at 11 to 15 inches tall and weighs about 18-20 pounds.

Standard Eskimos stand at 15 to 20 inches tall and weigh about 30 pounds.

Both breeds need exercises and daily walks to keep them active and happy.

Samoyed vs American Eskimo on the basis of Personality

American eskimo vs Samoyed personality comparison

Samoyed is a super-friendly, intelligent, gentle and loyal dog. They are affectionate with the family and love playing with kids and share a close bond with all the family members.

For Samoyed, Aggression is very rare. So they are not good guard dogs. If you stay alone and want a companion, Samoyed may not be for you as they stay happier in a family. As they were used for hunting hundreds of years back, they still have some traits of hunting in them.

They are likely to chase small animals like cats or squirrels, so you need to keep them attached with the leash. The personality of an individual Samoyed dog is also largely affected by the Training and Socialization he receives.

American Eskimos make excellent watchdogs, completely opposite from Samoyed dog. He is not so friendly with strangers as Samoyed is.

They are super energetic dogs who need vigorous exercise and opportunities to channel their energy. Make sure to give them enough training, exercise and exposure to the outside world. A bored American Eskimo can wreak havoc in your house as they start Non-stop barking and chewing.

As they are not so friendly with the strangers, make sure you keep them calm down when you are expecting guests at your home. They need a confident owner as they are a strong-willed breed of dogs. They are quick-learners, hence they can be trained easily and quickly.

Do not plan on leaving Eskimos alone so much as they love to stay and be around their family whom they love a lot. In their puppyhood, Eskimos can acquire Separation anxiety behaviour which is very destructive. It is advised to keep them in their crate with a lot of toys and treats and if they cry inside the crate, follow these steps.

Samoyed vs American Eskimo on the basis of Health

Samoyed is healthy but like all the dog breeds are prone to certain health problems, they are also. It is important to be aware of these problems if you are considering a Samoyed dog.

Samoyed is prone to Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, Hypothyroidism, and Glaucoma (Increased pressure in the eye).  You need to be aware of the fact that you will have to take proper care of their eyes and teeth. If they ever feel any pain or loss in vision, rush them to your Vet.

American Eskimo’s are prone to certain health problems like Hip Dysplasia, Pain and problems in Hip Joint, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and Juvenile Cataracts. American Eskimo’s can suffer from Eye-related problems more than any other breed of dogs.

If you are buying a puppy, find a good breeder who will be able to show health clearances for both the parents of that puppy. Health clearances are proof that a particular dog has been cleared and tested for a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA website.

What’s the Average Life of a Samoyed and American Eskimo?

Both the breeds have an average life span of 12 to 15 years. Though American Eskimos have a little more life expectancy average than Samoyed breed.

They can even live for less than 10 years if they are not properly trained, groomed or fed with a proper diet. Also, take proper precautionary steps needed to prevent any harmful health problems to occur to your dog.

Samoyed vs American Eskimo on the basis of Training

Both of these have backgrounds in which they were made to work for humans in some or the other way. This fact makes it a little easier to train these breeds. With proper Obedience Training, both Samoyed and Eskimos can be controlled in a better way.

Samoyed is very strong-willed and can get stubborn at times, therefore it is important to train him with basic obedience commands. In order to Train a Samoyed, you will require Consistency, Patience and Persistence. You may require to turn the Training routine into a fun game.

For American Eskimos as well, Vets and Dog Trainers recommend Obedience Training since their puppyhood. Training teaches him proper canine manners and respecting his owner and the family members.

Most dogs get bored and develop destructive behaviour if they are not taught with obedience training and other basic training commands in their puppyhood. Samoyed vs American Eskimo on the basis of Diet

Samoyed needs more to Eat. It is recommended to feed him 1.5 to 2.5 cups of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. It is better to feed your dog twice a day to prevent him from getting overweight. Feed a good quality diet with 22-25% Protein and 10-12% Fat.

American Eskimo’s need to eat around 0.5 to 1.5 cups of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. It depends on the size, age, shape and activity of a dog on how much they should eat. A highly active dog who exercises a lot can eat more than the recommended diet.

Please be careful with what dog food products you choose for your dog. Read the Ingredients and Proportions properly before feeding your dog. There are a lot of Unhygienic Food products in the Dog Food Industry and this is the Hidden Secret of Dog food industry.

Samoyed vs American Eskimo on the basis of Grooming

american eskimo vs samoyed grooming

Both of these breeds look similar due to their thick white coats. Samoyeds have a long and thick coat which protects the undercoat.

The undercoat is full of fur and soft which keeps the dog warm. Bathe your Samoyed dog once a month and his white thick coat will always be shining and making him look beautiful. Comb their fur once a week as well.

An American Eskimo also carries a dense and soft undercoat and a long overcoat. Eskies Shed a lot, so be ready with your brush to clean their hair once a week to prevent their hair to be found all over your house. In their Shedding period, you may need need to clean their coat and hair twice a week.

It is super easy to clean an Eskie’s coat as it contains oil which prevents dirt from sticking to the coat. So a simple brush is enough to clean the unwanted hair on your eskies coat.

I would recommend you to bathe your Eskimo once in 45 days as they do not need to bathe too often as they can suffer from skin problems due to that. Make sure to trim their nails once a month as well.

Samoyed vs American Eskimo on the basis of the cost needed to look after them

Samoyed is a little expensive as compared to an Eskimo. This is because they will need plenty of exercises and hence need plenty of food as well. Feeding them with Raw chicken sometimes also add to the cost.

But overall in general, they do not cost a lot to look after. Samoyed eats less and can be groomed by their owner. So they are not that expensive to be looked after.

Note: Both the breeds or in fact any breed of dogs can cost a lot of money to their owners if they develop any kind of Behavioural problem like Excessive Aggression, Barking, Nipping,  Jumping or Leash biting. Be sure to Train them well in time to prevent unwanted expenses later on. Conclusion: Which Breed is Better For You: Samoyed or American Eskimo

Well, there is no winner or loser as this is not a race. Both the breeds are perfect in their own way. Both of them look super cute and fluffy.

They are perfect Family companions and love to enjoy being with the family members. I have laid down a lot of points while comparing both the breeds and I hope you can decide on which one to go for.

Both the American Eskimo and Samoyed will prove to be a great partner for you and your family members. If I would be a first-time dog parent, I may go for American Eskimo though there is not any particular reason behind this.
