What Should you Do when your Yorkie is Bleeding during her Heat?

Do you remember the first time you got your periods? Surely, unforgettable! Every one of us would have a messy, lazy, or busy story of bleeding for the first time.

Like Humans, Yorkies also undergo a trail of mood swings when they are in heat. It will be physically and emotionally exhausting for them to carry a bleeding uterus for more than 12 days.

Understandably, you can not see your baby girl suffer in pain, and you want to go in every way possible to give her relief without relying on medications.

If you are wondering what should you do when your Yorkie is bleeding during her heat, then stick with me to the end of this article, where I’ll share a few things to provide comfort and security to your Yorkie in Heat.

What happens to your Yorkie when She’s in Heat?

A Female Yorkie bleeds between 12-24 days during her heat cycle. There are a total of 4 stages in the heat cycle. Learn more about the duration of the Heat Cycle in “How Long do Yorkies stay in Heat“?

The first two stages are the preparatory stage to make your Yorkie fertile and ready to conceive. The Proestrus Stage is the preliminary stage when your Yorkie’s vulva swells and gets dark in color.

There will be a thick discharge of blood. It lasts for the first 7-10 days.

The Estrus Stage is the most fertile phase in the heat cycle when your Yorkie’s vulva will get enlarged in size, and your Yorkie will be accepting male Yorkie’s companionship.

During this stage, your Yorkie would be attracting many male Yorkies for breeding purposes out of the smell her vulva is releasing. If you don’t want your Yorkie to bear pregnancy, you can keep an eye on your Yorkie she’s in heat, or you can don her dog-curated diapers to avoid any sexual activity. It ends on the 14th day of the cycle and lasts for 3-5 days.

The next stage is the Diestrus stage. During this time, your Yorkie experiences pregnancy and is ready to give birth to her puppies. Your Yorkie may give birth to 2 to 4 puppies at once

But this time, your Yorkie’s vulva recoups its old form, the swelling fades away, and the discharge is also less. It lasts for 60-90 days.

The final stage is the Anestrus Stage which is midway between the end of diestrus and the beginning of the Proestrus stage. It lasts for 30-90 days. And the cycle continues.

Remember, it’s not easy for your Yorkie to handle 12 days of continuous bleeding and menstruating. Like us, she also needs extra hugs, kisses, cuddles, and her chewy bubbles.

Here are a few things you can do to comfort your Yorkie when she’s in her Heat.

1. Provide her a Comfortable Place

The first thing on the checklist is to arrange a comfortable place for your Yorkie where she can peacefully rest without any disturbances around her. It is also necessary when your Yorkie doesn’t want to hold any pregnancy or unwanted pregnancy.

Make sure you keep her at a place where male dogs or even neutered female dogs can’t reach. Lest it will trigger your Yorkie’s hormones, and it will become difficult to calm down her nerves. It applies the same way if you have another Yorkie or any other dog in your house.

2. Facilitate her Bedroom

During the heat cycle, your Yorkie isn’t in her best mood. All she wants is a cozy and warm place to rest.

To make her feel better, you can arrange her mini-piggie bedroom with washed cushions, scented candles, your Yorkie’s Favourite Toys, chewy balls, her favorite snacks or treats.

Plus, a bowl of clean drinking water near her bedside as your Yorkie is losing water percentage from her body in the form of blood. Bring in dim lights to make her eyes feel relaxed and lull her to sleep at night.

3. Safe Breeding

If you and your Yorkie are ready to welcome new furry members in the family and you are planning to find a male dog for your Yorkie in heat to engage them in the process of breeding, Make sure you engage your Yorkie in mating during her Estrus stage because she is the most fertile during that time.

Also, do it under an expert’s supervision. You can contact any breeder, or if you are a new Yorkie parent, you can book an appointment at the nearest vet clinic.

4. Spay on Time

There could be a case where both you and your Yorkie don’t want to take up any more puppies or pregnancy complications.

You want to take your Yorkie for a spaying treatment to avoid any pregnancy complications in the future and also unwanted pregnancy due to male Yorkie getting attracted to the strong smell coming out of your Yorkie’s vulva when in heat.

It is advisable not to spay your Yorkie before she has completed one month of her current heat cycle. To not risk your Yorkie’s health, it is better to hold the door for a while.
